Spent the weekend at Bass Lake, near Cobalt, Ontario. Drove up Saturday morning and back home Sunday night. Bass Lake is a few kilometers from hwy 11, Yonge Street, about 5 hours north of Toronto (yes, north of North Bay and way north of Barrie). I was born in Cobalt and spent my first few years there. Almost every summer, we've returned to Bass Lake for a day or two and sometimes even a week or two. This weekend was a family reunion for the Morin's.
On the way up and back, I stopped at the Dionne Quints Museum. They give out free kindling firewood. I picked up three bags. This is a must stop for anybody camping in Northern Ontario. On the way back, we made the customary stop at Webbers. Overall, an excellent weekend. It helped that the bugs were much fewer this year.
Hi,
Could you please tell me a bit more about Bass Lake, what kind of forest is around there, is it easely accessible, what kind of beach is there, does it have a lotof rocks and overall is it a good area?
Thank you very muc (could not find anything at all about Bass Lake on the net - only your little message about the weekend well spent there)

Bass Lake is mostly surrounded by forest. To get to Bass Lake you take highway 11 north of North Bay, Ontario. An hour+ north and you'll arrive at the Cobalt Truck Stop (right) and Highway Book Shop (left). You turn on 11b towards the town of Cobalt (where I was born). A few minutes later, you turn right on Bass Lake Rd and this leads you around the lake. All the roads are well maintained, even in the Canadian winter. The two beaches (10-50 meters) are man made and not very well maintained. There's about a dozen small cottages and one big cottage near the campground. Another dozen RV water/electrical campsites are near the lake and two more dozen sewage/water/electrical campsites are across the road. There's a dozen or more houses around the lake that are lived in year round. One of the houses is my godmother's.
If you examine this map, then Bass Lake rd goes south of highway 11b halfway between the main highway 11 and Cobalt.
Hi there,
Thanks a lot for your comments, maybe it is hard to believe but for some God's known reason I stareted to get interested in this area and consider to buy a property there. What I found that : 1. the gasoline engines are forbidden on the lake; 2.Pesticides use is restricted and limited (not have been in use as in other parts of Ontario and the country); 3. and listen to this: the fluoridisation of water was banned by the referendum of as many people as 1,250.00! I already love this little town for which they say:"don't blink or you miss it!" I do not know if I bother you or not, but obviously you LOVE the area and the Bass Lake, and maybe it is not as fansy, but it is really unique. I will certainly appreciate if you say more about the Bass Lake, what is it in it?
Best wishes,
Olga
I grew up in Cobalt. I practically lived at Bass Lake in one of the cabins belonging to the Kiwanis Club. We lived in Cobalt until I was 12, then moved to North Bay, but that didn't stop us from spending weeks at Bass Lake every summer. I am now 26, and it's still my favorite place in the world! We now rent a cabin all summer long. The water is amazing, the people you meet are even better! The bugs aren't that bad around the camp fire, and there is nothing like the sound of a loon at sundown! The long weekend in August is the craziest time to be there. Not as busy as it used to be, but there is a ball tournament that attracts people from all over. I can't say anything bad about this place, even the outhouse is bearable when you have such beautiful scenery and atmosphere outside!
I highly recommend Bass Lake as a camping destination to everyone I meet!

Bass Lake is spring fed, so the water is pure. It is an amazeing place, and we should all work to preserve it!

Bass Lake is such a great place to camp. My husbands family have camped there all his life and his dad camped there when he was a child. When we met he took me on the Augest long weekend which is the miners festival since then we return with our kids and they love it as much as we do. I recommend Bass Lake to anyone.

My family and I have been camping at Bass Lake for the past 2 summers. Since we live in the nearby town of Haileybury, we take our trailer there for the season and spend all of our weekends and as many days as possible through the week there. The beaches are fantastic---the water is crystal clear--and since my 2 kids love the water, they spend most of their days swimming. The only thing missing this year is our campfires due to the fire restriction because of lack of rain. I would recommend camping at Bass Lake to everyone.
If your are ever up in the area again check out www.silverqueen.ca for information about the area around Bass Lake, things to do

Bass Lake, Cobalt
Fantastic place to camp while visiting in the Cobalt, Ontario area. While in Cobalt I suggest you visit Cobalt's new Welcome Centre, the Great Canadian Mine Show, Mining Museum, Heritage Silver Trail, Silverland Inn & Motel (ice cream parlour), Classic Theatre..... so much history. Summer of 2006 will host 2 fantastic festivals -- Cobalt Rocks (July 29 & 30), 2006 -- includes a midway www.cobaltrocks.com and Miner's Festival Aug. 4-7, 2006.
I have a cottage on Bass Lake, and it's really a lot of fun all year round! Each New Years Day, we hold the Turk Memorial Bass Lake Challenge, a private, and non-competitive hockey tournament held exclusively for the cottagers, in memory of Wayne "Turk" Smith, who started the tournament 4 years ago, and sadly, passed away over the holidays.
Our beach holds an annual Canada Day fireworks display ( we usually compete with the Public Beach's). The summer holds many fun, hot days ahead, and night after night of picture perfect sunsets.
ps - gasoline engines are permitted to those who own property on the lake (not including the Kiwanis Public Beach). You'll probably see us bombing around on the waterski's!
I'd recommend Bass Lake to anyone.

I have always loved going to basslake as a kid, and it never changed as I was growing up, and now I find that I am spoiled by basslake ( the perfect beach), so much that I find it hard to swim at any other beach. I have an amazing amount of memories at that lake and I hope to make so many more.
Thanks Bass Lake

I am planning a weekend in early august to go camping, my mom used to bring me and my cousins to bass lake every summer, as well as my morin family reunions at camp jeunesse en marche. i see that a fellow morin was the first to leave a message about the campsite. bass lake is my favourite place on earth. I was hoping that there were pictures of the area online somewhere, i am trying to peruade my boyfriend to come, and i jsut want him to be more familiar with the area.
When my mom and aunt took us kids camping we always reserved three cabins, 4 6 and 8. if you go camping in the last two weeks of august New Liskard has (had) a theater where they have a special for one weekend (i think), where you can go and see a newly released movie for a toonie, and that includes popcorn and a small pop...
Its really a great area! as i said before, its my favourite place on earth

I was driving along higway 11 on a hot humid day and I decided to take the Cobalt turn off for a change of scenery. On my way I noticed many turning signals ahead and the sign read Bass Lake.I decided to follow the traffic to see what all the fuss was about. What a surprize was I in for.....a beautiful refreshing lake with many happy people. I was even more impressed when I asked what all the children were doing gathered together playing games and having fun while others looked to be enjoying a swimming lesson in the water.I was told there was a bus that picks the children up from haileybury, cobalt, and surrounding areas, and brings them to the lake daily for recreation and swimming lessons! They all looked like they were having a great time with their recreation leader, and the others who decided to take a swim were safe with the Life Gaurds on duty, and the others who were in lessons were having fun with their swimming instructor! To my left there was another croud of people on a second beach who were enjoying the sun, swimming and having a great time. What a little hidden oasis I found in the area I have lived in for so long. I am from New Liskeard and never knew about this beautiful lake and great summer program for children. Next year I am certainly registering my children early to ensure a spot in this program! Good job! Well done! Bass Lake will be our new swimming haven!

It's so nice to see all of these wonderful comments about Bass Lake! My home away from home! I was one of the first to comment on this post (Hi Edie and Charity!)
It's great to hear that others have just as many memories as I do, and that there are new memories being made by those just discovering our little piece of heaven on earth!
My only request is that we all work hard to preserve our beautiful treasure and make sure that it is around for our children's children to enjoy!!!
Cheers!

Hello All,
I am from Kitchener Ontario. I had never been to "Northern Ontario" up until a few years ago. My Girlfriend home town is Cobalt/North Cobalt/Hailbury. I took her home one summer after dating all winter and she took me to Bass Lake. And I was absolutely amazed the water in that lake. As I am sure alot of the lakes up there are like, clear as day. I went out 30 ft and I could still see the bottom of the lake. It was very much amazing, and all I kept saying was " I cant believe I can still see my feet!" Compared to some of the waterways down in Southern Ontario..her family just kept laughing at me. It is just unfortunet that we have to drive 5 to 8 hours from southwestern Ontario just to experience waterways like that.
Her grandfather suffered two heartattacks recently so I am heading up to that area this Civic Long weekend to drop her off. And I am sure we will be going to Bass Lake for one day before I head back home to the smog and dirty water and non comparable "Conservation Areas" of the south.
Have A Safe and Happy Civic Holiday!

Would anyone have any information on the accomodations at Bass Lake. I grew up in that area and am now living down south and would love to rent the larger cottage there for a week during the summer, but have been unable to find any info on it on the internet. It is truly a beautiful place and would love my family to experience it like I was able to when I was a child.
Thanks true Northern Girl
